JEWELBLU OPTICALFIBER PATCH CORDS Technical Inquiry

What components make up an optical cable

A fiber optic cable consists of five main components: the core, cladding, coating, strength members, and outer jacket, each serving a critical role in transmitting light signals and protecting the fiber.Core

The core is the central strand of glass or plastic that carries light signals over long distances. It is made of ultra-pure silica (SiO2) or sometimes plastic, allowing minimal signal loss. Core diameters vary: single-mode fibers typically have an 8–10 µm core for long-distance, high-bandwidth applications, while multimode fibers have 50–62.5 µm cores suitable for shorter distances like campus networks .

Cladding

Surrounding the core is the cladding, which has a lower refractive index than the core. This difference enables total internal reflection, keeping light confined within the core and preventing signal leakage. The cladding is usually coated with a thin layer of acrylate polymer or polyimide for additional protection .

Coating

The coating or primary buffer layer protects the fiber from physical damage, scratches, and contamination. It also prevents fiber stretching and breakage during handling and installation. Dual-layer acrylate coatings are common for durability .

Strength Members

Strength members provide mechanical support to prevent the fiber from breaking under tension. These can be made of aramid yarn (like Kevlar), fiberglass, or steel, depending on whether the cable is indoor, outdoor, or armored .

Outer Jacket

The outer jacket is the protective sheath that shields the fiber from environmental factors such as moisture, UV exposure, and fire. Jacket materials are selected based on installation requirements and building codes, with options for indoor, outdoor, or armored applications .

Additional Notes

Some fiber optic cables may include ripcords, water-blocking gels, or additional layers for specialized applications. The combination of these components ensures high-speed, low-loss data transmission while maintaining durability and safety in various environments .
