Light Source Fiber Optic Sensor

Fiber optic sensors primarily use LEDs as their light source, which emit light that travels through the optical fiber to detect changes in the environment.Overview of the Light Source

Fiber optic sensors rely on a light-emitting device, typically an LED (Light Emitting Diode), to generate the light that travels through the optical fiber to the sensing element and detector . The light from the LED is usually unpolarized, meaning it oscillates in multiple directions, but it can be converted to polarized light using optical filters for specific sensing applications . Some sensors also use pulse-modulated light, where the LED emits light in repeated intervals to improve detection accuracy .

Role in Sensor Types
  • Intrinsic Fiber Optic Sensors: The fiber itself acts as the sensing element. The LED light travels through the fiber, and any changes in intensity, phase, polarization, or wavelength caused by the measurand (e.g., strain, temperature, or pressure) are detected at the end of the fiber .
  • Extrinsic Fiber Optic Sensors: The fiber primarily transmits light to and from an external transducer. The LED light is guided to the sensing element, and the modulated light is returned through the fiber to the detector .
Advantages of Using LEDs
  • Fast Response: LEDs provide rapid light emission, enabling high-speed sensing .
  • Environmental Resistance: The fiber unit has no electrical components at the sensing tip, making it resistant to temperature, vibration, and electrical noise .
  • Non-contact Sensing: The light allows detection without physical contact, reducing wear and damage to objects .
Summary

In essence, the LED serves as the primary light source in most fiber optic sensors, providing a reliable, fast, and flexible means to transmit light through the optical fiber. The light interacts with the sensing element—either within the fiber itself or via an external transducer—and the resulting changes are detected to measure physical quantities such as displacement, pressure, or temperature .
