Working principle of a standalone switch

A standalone network switch operates by learning MAC addresses and forwarding data frames only to the intended destination port, enabling efficient communication between connected devices.Basic Operation

A standalone switch is a multi-port network device that connects multiple devices within a local area network (LAN) and operates primarily at the Data Link Layer (Layer 2) of the OSI model . When powered on, the switch starts with an empty MAC address table. Initially, if a data frame arrives and the destination MAC address is unknown, the switch broadcasts the frame to all ports except the source port .

MAC Address Learning

The switch learns the network topology dynamically by examining the source MAC address of incoming frames. For example, if a frame enters through port 3 with a source MAC address of 00-11-22-33-44-55, the switch records this mapping in its MAC address table. Over time, as more frames are received, the table becomes more complete, allowing the switch to forward frames efficiently .

Data Forwarding

Once the switch has a record of the destination MAC address, it forwards the frame directly to the corresponding port. For instance, if the MAC table shows that 00-66-77-88-99-00 is on port 7, any frame destined for this address is sent only to port 7, reducing unnecessary network traffic and improving bandwidth utilization .

Broadcast and Multicast Handling

If a frame is a broadcast (destination MAC FF-FF-FF-FF-FF-FF) or multicast, the switch sends it to all ports except the source port. This ensures that messages intended for multiple devices, such as ARP requests, reach all relevant devices on the network .

Communication Modes

Standalone switches support unicast (one-to-one), multicast (one-to-many), and broadcast (one-to-all) communication. They operate in full-duplex mode, allowing simultaneous sending and receiving of data, which maximizes network efficiency .
