Cold splicing of fiber optic drop cable and patch cord

Cold splicing is a mechanical method to join fiber optic cables quickly and efficiently without fusion, ideal for field repairs and FTTH installations. What is Cold Splicing?

Cold splicing, also known as mechanical splicing, is a method of joining two fiber optic cables end-to-end using a mechanical connector or cold splice kit rather than melting the fibers together with a fusion splicer. It is commonly used for patch cords, drop cables, and short-term or field connections where speed and convenience are prioritized over the absolute lowest signal loss. Cold splicing is particularly popular in FTTH (fiber-to-the-home) deployments due to its simplicity and low equipment requirements .

Advantages of Cold Splicing
  • Ease of operation: Requires minimal equipment, typically just a fiber cutter and a cold splice connector .
  • Field-friendly: Can be performed outdoors or in tight spaces without a fusion splicer .
  • Quick installation: Faster than fusion splicing, making it suitable for emergency repairs or temporary connections .
  • Cost-effective: Lower initial investment compared to fusion splicing equipment .
Step-by-Step Cold Splicing Procedure
  1. Prepare the fibers: Strip about 3 cm of the protective coating from each fiber and clean the bare fiber with alcohol .
  2. Cut the fiber ends: Use a fiber cleaver to cut each fiber to a precise length, typically around 1.4 cm .
  3. Insert fibers into the cold splice connector: Place each fiber into the designated slots of the cold splice, ensuring the bare fiber ends meet in the central V-groove .
  4. Secure the fibers: Snap the side rings or clamps to hold the fibers firmly in place .
  5. Test the connection: Use an optical power meter or OTDR to verify the splice quality and ensure minimal signal loss .
Performance Considerations
  • Insertion loss: Cold splices typically have a higher loss than fusion splices, around 0.2–0.75 dB, compared to 0.03–0.05 dB for fusion splicing .
  • Durability: Mechanical splices are less permanent and may be more sensitive to environmental factors like vibration or moisture .
  • Applications: Best suited for short-distance connections, emergency repairs, or temporary installations. For long-haul or mission-critical networks, fusion splicing is preferred .
Tools and Materials Needed
  • Fiber optic cold splice kit or mechanical splice connector
  • Fiber stripper and cleaver
  • Alcohol wipes for cleaning
  • Optional: OTDR or power meter for testing
Summary

Cold splicing provides a fast, convenient, and cost-effective method to join fiber optic patch cords and drop cables, especially in field environments or FTTH deployments. While it introduces slightly higher signal loss than fusion splicing, its simplicity and minimal equipment requirements make it an essential technique for technicians performing quick repairs or temporary connections .
