Fiber Optic Cable Production Materials

Fiber optic cables are primarily made from ultra-pure silica glass for the core and cladding, acrylate coatings, aramid yarn for strength, and protective polymer jackets such as PE, PVC, or LSZH.

Core and Cladding Materials
  • Core: The central part of the fiber that transmits light, typically made from high-purity silica glass (SiO₂). For enhanced performance, dopants like germanium or phosphorus are added to control the refractive index, especially in multimode fibers. Plastic optical fibers may use polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) for short-distance applications .
  • Cladding: Surrounds the core and maintains light confinement through total internal reflection. Usually made from silica with a slightly lower refractive index than the core, or fluorinated polymers in plastic fibers .
Coating Materials
  • Primary and secondary coatings: Typically UV-cured acrylate layers, with a soft inner layer and a hard outer layer to protect the fiber from mechanical damage and environmental factors .
  • Identification coatings: UV-cured color inks are used for fiber identification in multi-fiber cables .
  • Ribbon matrix resin: For ribbon cables, a UV-curable resin holds multiple fibers together .
Strength Members
  • Aramid yarn (Kevlar®): Provides tensile strength and prevents fiber breakage during installation .
  • Fiberglass rods or steel wires: Used in some outdoor or armored cables to increase rigidity and crush resistance .
  • Other materials: Proprietary micro-additives, glass flakes, or borate may be included for enhanced durability or environmental resistance .
Outer Jacket Materials
  • Polyethylene (PE): Common for outdoor cables due to UV and moisture resistance .
  • High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE): Offers better crush resistance for harsh environments .
  • Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC): Often used indoors for flame resistance and flexibility .
  • Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH): Used in fire-sensitive environments like tunnels or aircraft .
  • Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPE): Provides flexibility and durability for specialized applications .
Water-Blocking Materials
  • Water-blocking gels: Prevent moisture ingress in outdoor or underground installations .
  • Water-swellable tapes or yarns: Expand upon contact with water to seal the cable and protect fibers .
Additional Components
  • UV-curable resins and micro-additives: Enhance performance in specific cable types, such as gel-filled or dry-core designs .
  • Ripcords and messenger wires: Facilitate cable handling and installation .

This combination of materials ensures that fiber optic cables are durable, flexible, and capable of high-speed, low-loss data transmission across various environments and applications.
