Interface on the optical splitter

An optical splitter typically has one or two input fibers and multiple output fibers, with interfaces designed to connect to OLTs and ONTs in a PON network.Input and Output Interfaces

Optical splitters are passive devices that distribute light from a single input fiber to multiple output fibers, or vice versa. Most commonly, a splitter has one input and multiple outputs (e.g., 1x2, 1x4, 1x8, 1x32, 1x64), though some designs include two inputs for redundancy, known as 2xN splitters . The input fiber connects to the Optical Line Terminal (OLT), while the output fibers connect to Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) at subscriber locations . The interfaces are usually standard fiber connectors such as SC, LC, or FC types, allowing easy integration into the fiber network. The choice of connector depends on network design, deployment environment, and compatibility with existing equipment.

Split Ratios and Signal Distribution

The split ratio defines how the input optical power is divided among the outputs. For example, a 1x4 splitter divides the input signal into four outputs, each receiving roughly one-fourth of the original power . Higher split ratios (like 1x32 or 1x64) allow more subscribers per OLT port but increase insertion loss, which reduces the optical power at each output . Some splitters provide unequal splitting, where outputs receive different power levels to accommodate varying distances or subscriber requirements. Balanced splitters (2xN) are used for redundancy, allowing two inputs to feed multiple outputs proportionally .

Deployment Architectures

Splitters can be deployed in centralized or distributed architectures. In centralized splitting, multiple splitters are located at a central office or cabinet, and fiber jumpers allow flexible assignment of outputs to subscribers . Distributed splitting places splitters closer to the end users, often in pedestals or closures, with fixed output assignments . The interface design must support the chosen architecture, ensuring reliable connections and easy maintenance.

Key Performance Considerations

When connecting splitters, the interface must account for:

  • Insertion Loss: Power reduction due to splitting.
  • Uniformity: Consistency of output power across all ports.
  • Connector Type: Compatibility with OLT/ONT equipment.
  • Environmental Protection: For outdoor or pedestal-mounted splitters, interfaces may include sealed enclosures to protect against moisture and dust . In summary, the interface on an optical splitter consists of standardized fiber connectors for one or two inputs and multiple outputs, designed to integrate seamlessly into PON networks while supporting various split ratios and deployment architectures. Proper interface selection ensures efficient signal distribution, network scalability, and reliable operation.
