Om4 single-mode fiber

OM4 is a multimode fiber type and cannot be considered single-mode; single-mode fiber uses a much smaller core for long-distance transmission, while OM4 is optimized for high-speed, short-range links.Key Differences Between OM4 and Single-Mode Fiber

Core Size and Light Propagation: OM4 is a multimode fiber with a 50-micron core, allowing multiple light modes to travel simultaneously. This enables high-speed data transmission over short distances but introduces modal dispersion, which limits its effective range . Single-mode fiber (OS1/OS2) has a 9-micron core, allowing only a single light path, eliminating modal dispersion and supporting long-distance transmission over kilometers . Distance and Bandwidth: OM4 supports 10Gb Ethernet up to 550 meters, 40Gb up to 150 meters, and 100Gb up to 100 meters, making it ideal for data centers and campus networks . Single-mode fiber can carry signals over tens of kilometers without significant loss, suitable for inter-building links, metro networks, and carrier connections . Applications:

  • OM4: Short-range, high-speed connections within buildings or data centers, using VCSEL lasers at 850 nm .
  • Single-mode (OS2): Long-haul, high-bandwidth applications, including inter-site backbones and connections to public fiber networks . Cost Considerations: Single-mode transceivers and installation are generally more expensive than OM4 multimode solutions due to the precision required for the smaller core . OM4 is cost-effective for short-range, high-speed networks but cannot replace single-mode for long-distance links. Compatibility: OM4 cannot function as single-mode fiber. While some specialized transceivers allow limited single-mode signals over multimode fiber (known as mode conditioning), this is not standard practice and is limited in distance and performance . For true long-distance single-mode applications, OS2 fiber is required.
Summary

OM4 is enhanced multimode fiber optimized for high-speed, short-range networks, whereas single-mode fiber (OS1/OS2) is designed for long-distance, high-bandwidth transmission. They differ in core size, light propagation, distance, and cost, and OM4 cannot replace single-mode fiber for long-haul applications. Choosing between them depends on network distance, speed requirements, and budget .
