Methods for Splicing and Stripping Fiber Cores in Optical Cables

Fiber splicing is the process of joining two optical fibers end-to-end, and fiber core stripping is the preparatory step of removing protective layers to expose the fiber for splicing.Fiber Core Stripping

Fiber core stripping is the first critical step in preparing an optical fiber for splicing. It involves removing the outer jacket, coating, and cladding layers to expose the bare glass fiber core without causing damage. The process typically includes:

  • Cable stripping: Using a cable stripper to peel off the outer plastic sheath and inner coating layers, usually exposing 3–5 cm of bare fiber for single-core fibers, while avoiding excessive force that could break the fiber .
  • Cleaning: After stripping, any debris or coating residue is removed using a dust-free cloth and alcohol to ensure a clean fiber surface .
  • Precision handling: The fiber should be held gently and stripped perpendicularly to avoid micro-cracks or scratches that could increase signal loss . Proper stripping ensures that the fiber end-face is ready for cleaving and splicing, which is essential for achieving low-loss connections.
Fiber Splicing

Fiber splicing is the process of joining two optical fibers to create a continuous light path. There are two main methods:

1. Mechanical Splicing
  • Uses an alignment device and index-matching gel to hold fibers in place.
  • The gel matches the refractive index of the fiber to minimize light reflection and loss.
  • Provides a semi-permanent connection with typical insertion loss around 0.3 dB.
  • Ideal for temporary connections or quick repairs, as it does not require heat or fusion .
2. Fusion Splicing
  • Involves melting the fiber ends together using an electric arc or heat to form a permanent joint.
  • Requires precise core alignment using a fusion splicer, which may employ core or cladding alignment techniques.
  • Produces very low insertion loss (around 0.1 dB) and minimal back reflection, making it the preferred method for single-mode fibers and permanent installations .
  • Steps include:
    1. Stripping and cleaning the fiber.
    2. Cleaving the fiber end to create a flat, perpendicular surface.
    3. Aligning the fibers in the fusion splicer.
    4. Fusing the fibers with controlled heat.
    5. Protecting the splice with a heat-shrink sleeve or protective cover .
Best Practices
  • Ensure all tools, including cleavers and splicers, are clean and properly maintained .
  • Avoid contamination of the fiber end-face before splicing.
  • Use protective sleeves to safeguard the splice point after fusion.
  • Verify splice quality by measuring insertion loss; a loss below 0.03 dB is considered excellent for fusion splicing . By carefully performing fiber core stripping and splicing, technicians can achieve high-quality, low-loss optical connections essential for reliable network performance in telecommunications and data networks .
