The two main methods of optical cable splicing are fusion splicing and mechanical splicing, each offering distinct advantages depending on performance, cost, and application requirements.Fusion Splicing

Fusion splicing is the most common and reliable method for joining optical fibers. It involves aligning the fiber ends precisely and using an electric arc to melt and fuse them into a single continuous strand . This creates a permanent joint with minimal signal loss and back reflection. Procedure:

  1. Strip the protective coating from the fiber ends.
  2. Clean the bare fibers thoroughly with alcohol wipes.
  3. Use a fusion splicer to automatically align the fiber cores.
  4. Apply an electric arc to melt and fuse the fibers.
  5. Protect the joint with a heat-shrink sleeve to restore mechanical strength. Advantages:
  • Very low insertion loss (typically around 0.02–0.1 dB), ideal for high-speed and long-distance networks.
  • Durable and permanent, resistant to environmental changes and vibrations.
  • High reliability, commonly used in telecom backbones and data centers. Disadvantages:
  • Expensive equipment and initial setup costs.
  • Requires skilled technicians for precise alignment.
  • Preparation can be time-consuming, though the actual splicing is quick.
Mechanical Splicing

Mechanical splicing joins fibers by physically aligning the ends within a specialized housing and using an index-matching gel to bridge the microscopic gap, allowing light to pass through . Unlike fusion splicing, it does not permanently melt the fibers together. Procedure:

  1. Strip and clean the fiber ends.
  2. Place the fibers into a mechanical splice unit.
  3. Apply index-matching gel to reduce reflection and loss.
  4. Secure the fibers with a snap cover or adhesive. Advantages:
  • Faster and simpler, requiring no electric arc or fusion splicer.
  • Lower initial equipment cost.
  • Can be temporary or permanent, suitable for emergency repairs or short-distance connections. Disadvantages:
  • Higher insertion loss (typically 0.2–0.75 dB) compared to fusion splicing.
  • Less durable over long-term or harsh environmental conditions.
  • Slightly higher back reflection, making it less ideal for high-speed or long-haul networks.
