Structural Features of Fiber Optic Sensors

A fiber optic sensor typically consists of a light source, optical fiber, sensing element (or transducer), and a detector, with the fiber itself acting as either the sensing medium or a signal conduit.Key Components

1. Light Source The light source generates the optical signal that travels through the fiber. Common sources include LEDs or laser diodes, chosen based on wavelength, intensity, and coherence requirements for the sensor application . 2. Optical Fiber The optical fiber is the core component, guiding light from the source to the sensing region and back to the detector. It consists of:

  • Core: The central region where light propagates, typically made of glass or plastic.
  • Cladding: Surrounds the core and has a lower refractive index to confine light within the core via total internal reflection.
  • Sheath/Coating: Provides mechanical protection and flexibility, often made of polyethylene or stainless steel for high-temperature applications . Fibers can be plastic (lightweight, flexible, cost-effective) or glass (high precision, high-temperature tolerance) depending on the application . 3. Sensing Element / Transducer The transducer modulates a property of the light in response to the physical quantity being measured, such as intensity, phase, wavelength, or polarization.
  • Intrinsic sensors: The fiber itself is modified to sense the measurand directly.
  • Extrinsic sensors: The fiber transmits light to an external transducer that performs the modulation . 4. Detector The detector receives the modulated light and converts it into an electrical signal for analysis. It measures changes in intensity, wavelength, or phase caused by the interaction of the light with the measurand .
Additional Considerations
  • Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs): Specialized structures inscribed in the fiber that reflect specific wavelengths, allowing precise measurement of strain, temperature, or pressure .
  • Configuration Types: Sensors can be thru-beam (separate transmitter and receiver) or reflective (single unit with parallel, coaxial, or separate fiber arrangements) depending on the application . These components work together to provide a highly sensitive, flexible, and electromagnetic interference-resistant sensing system suitable for applications ranging from structural health monitoring to industrial automation .
